Position:

Community Organizer

Reports to the Organizing Director

Position Summary:

The Community Organizer is responsible for managing engagement and leadership development as well as mobilizing the church network. This position will interact directly with tenants through canvassing and teaching

them about their rights in order to mobilize for change.

Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for engagement and leadership development of network churches
  • Mobilize members of each assigned member church for relevant actions and coalition work
  • Conduct tenant outreach through canvassing, door knocking and distribution of educational materials
  • Lead political education, leadership development and tenant rights workshops for members
  • Cultivate and maintain member relationships and development
  • Coordinate with churches and partner organizations to build alignment and coalition around issues spanning multiple areas
  • Ensure engagement of member churches and tenants to advance organizational policy
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED equivalent required; advanced education preferred
  • Spanish fluency (spoken and written) is preferred
  • Previous community organizing experience preferred
  • Belief in community organizing as a means to improve community development
  • Willingness to participate in a commitment to social justice
  • A deep passion for social justice and community organizing 
  • Experience working in low-income urban communities
  • Ability to multitask many different activities and remain organized
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly working with people in crisis, and with local community organizations in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Basic computer skills, including Google G Suite
  • Good teamwork skills, high energy and a positive attitude
  • Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills are required
