We have an immediate need for a Policy Analyst to support the firm’s government relations (GR) team in our Sacramento office. The role is an integral part of our Government Relations Practice and critical to the success of our work on behalf of clients. In this role, you would be working under a team of accomplished and respected public policy professionals, including former Members of Congress, cabinet secretaries, and senior executive agency officials. We are seeking an individual who has some experience in at least one of the following policy areas: healthcare, tax, tech/telecom, cannabis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Track legislation, as well as policy and regulatory changes, and inform clients and Brownstein policy teams of these updates in a timely manner
- Track state policy developments in the key industries for Brownstein’s California clients
- Write weekly summaries of relevant policy developments for clients
- Provide coverage of legislative hearings for clients
- Participate in regular calls with clients. This may include giving the client real-time updates and/or preparing background materials for the GR team members who represent the client
- Write research memos for the GR team and clients on legislation, political races, policy developments, regulatory updates, etc.
- Conduct research on potential clients, create pre-pitch materials for the GR team, and contribute to proposals as needed
- Help coordinate meetings for clients at the Capitol, government agencies, or with third party groups
- Perform other research and duties as required
- Candidate will eventually be asked to take greater responsibility for coordinating and leading Brownstein policy team meetings and organizing the team’s engagement efforts on behalf of clients
- Prepare a range of written communications for internal and external audiences
- Monitor, track and report to senior team members and clients on legislative, regulatory and other policy and political developments
- Support advocacy activities
- Maintain relationships with government officials and domestic and foreign clients
- Additional duties as needed
Required and Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree required, Master’s degree preferred
- 2+ years’ of work experience, including 1+ year of Capitol or agency experience or relevant private sector experience
- Exceptionally strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience working in the Legislature, Executive Branch, political campaigns, advocacy and lobbying, and/or policy research and analysis
- Strong computer and research skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and balance competing priorities
- Ability to engage clients and government officials in a mature, professional manner
- Successful candidates will have outstanding writing skills, strong organizational skills, the ability to work under pressure in fast-paced environments, balance competing priorities, excellent research and analytical skills, and will pay close attention to detail. Additionally, candidates should have solid political awareness, leadership experience, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently, as well as in a team-oriented, collaborative manner
Compensation and Benefits: Brownstein offers a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401k + match, profit sharing, and vacation/sick/personal time off. In addition this role pays overtime for hours worked above 40 per week, non-exempt positions will be paid on an hourly basis and paid overtime in accordance with applicable laws. We are offering salary of $85,000 for this role, commensurate with experience.
