Position Summary:

The Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator plays a critical role in expanding the reach and impact of SMYAL by building and maintaining partnerships, engaging the community, and coordinating volunteer efforts. This position is responsible for implementing community outreach strategies, developing collaborations with local organizations, and recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers. The aim is to increase awareness of our programs and services, enhance community engagement, and ensure the delivery of high-quality services to LGBTQ+ youth.

Position Responsibilities:

Outreach and Community Engagement

  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to connect with LGBTQ+ youth, their families, and community members and advocates.
  • Represent the organization at community events to promote our mission and programs.
  • Collaborate with local organizations, schools, and community groups to expand awareness and referrals to our programs.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with service providers and other LGBTQ+ organizations.
  • Coordinate outreach events and ensure we have materials and staff needed.

Volunteer Program Development

  • Collaborate with program staff to identify volunteer needs and develop volunteer roles and responsibilities.
  • Design and implement effective volunteer policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Regularly assess the volunteer program's effectiveness and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal requirements and ethical standards related to volunteer management. 

Volunteer Recruitment and Management

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive volunteer recruitment strategy to attract a diverse pool of volunteers.
  • Conduct screening and background checks (when necessary) for potential volunteers.
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate volunteer orientation and training sessions.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date volunteer records, including hours volunteered, skills, and interests.
  • Provide ongoing support and supervision to volunteers, ensuring they feel valued and engaged in their roles.
  • Recognize and celebrate the contributions of volunteers through appreciation events and initiatives.
  • Stay up to date on best practices for volunteers and youth work

Data Management and Reporting

  • Track and maintain accurate records of outreach activities, community partnerships, and volunteer engagement.
  • Prepare regular reports on outreach efforts, volunteer recruitment, and program impact for the Department Director.
  • Utilize data and metrics to evaluate the success of outreach strategies and make informed decisions for program growth and improvement.

Position Qualifications:

  • Minimum high school diploma; degree in social work, human services, or a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ+ issues, particularly those impacting youth.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and connect with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Spanish and/or ASL proficiency is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in community outreach, volunteer management, or a related field.
  • Experience working with volunteers, including recruitment, training, and supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in data management and reporting.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for outreach events and volunteer activities.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle preferred.
  • Some evening and weekend availability is required.
