The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations in New York has a temporary vacancy (40 hours per week) for a Senior Policy Officer Future Generations.
This job will be offered at pay scale 10 for a fixed term of 9 months, with a probationary period of one month (see also enclosed job description - English version only).

Policy Officer Future Generations

General Characteristics
- Within the context of the Summit of the Future to be held at the United Nations in
September 2024, the policy officer is primarily tasked to initiate and coordinate the negotiation process of the Declaration on Future Generations.
- The policy officer supports the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the
- Netherlands, who together with the PR of Jamaica is the co-facilitator of the Declaration on Future Generations.
- The policy officer coordinates with the Permanent Representation of Jamaica, relevant departments of the United Nations, member states, the EU, CSOs, academia and with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague.
Tasks and result areas
Description of specific results areas:
- Successful adoption of a concise and action oriented Declaration on Future Generations, reached through a transparent and inclusive negotiation process.
- Internal and external stakeholders are informed in a timely and comprehensive fashion about developments on the Declaration on Future Generations.
Tasks
- Initiating and coordinating the consultation and negotiation process of the Declaration on Future Generations in close collaboration with the Mission of Jamaica and the co- facilitators of the Pact for the Future.
- Assisting and advising the Permanent Representative on substance and process and preparing her for meetings.
- Providing high quality policy advice and analysis on the topic of future generations.
- Building and maintaining a functional network with the UN, UN Member States, the EU
Delegation, private sector, academia, civil society organizations and other relevant stakeholders.
- Participating in and reporting on relevant meetings and developments to The Hague.
- Organizing meetings and consultations with member states and external stakeholders where needed and identifying opportunities for public diplomacy.

COMPOSITION OF THE TEAM:
The senior policy officer will work directly with the Permanent Representative and also be part of the mission wide Summit of the Future Task Force, consisting of a coordinator and focal points from the development cooperation department (HRD) and Political Affairs and
Communications Department (PA), and the Military and Police Department.
REQUIREMENTS
- Public policy, diplomatic and/or multilateral experience, preferably in UN context.
- Experience with and/or knowledge of SDGs and in particular future generations is considered to be an asset.
- In addition, the ideal candidate also possesses political sensitivity and a strong interest for global affairs. Excellent language skills in English are a requirement.
Knowledge & Skills
Academic level: Master’s Degree required, preferably in relevant fields such as international relations and development cooperation.
Experience: minimum 5 years relevant working experience.
- Knowledge of the concepts of future generations and intergenerational equity.
- Knowledge of the UN system.
- Experience in external/diplomatic representation.
- Works independently, takes initiative and has good coordination skills.
- Is skilled at writing clear and concise reports and policy briefs.
- Ability to structure and process large quantities of information and to translate these into policy advice, plans and reports.
- A team player and strong networker who has a flexible and collegial attitude.
