Position Focus:

Within the Yale School of Music (YSM), the Communications Associate will be responsible for liaising with YSM's concert office, artistic directors, admissions team, student life team, and other teams as necessary to manage advertising placements for concerts, prospective students, and current students. The Communications Associate will also be responsible for tracking the analytics for advertising placements and working with the Director of Communications to develop a comprehensive advertising strategy to meet institutional goals. The Communications Associate will also develop and distribute the school's weekly concert newsletter, and work with the communications team to schedule weekly posts on YSM's social media platforms.

Essential Duties include manage school newsletters. Create designs for communications projects. Write blog posts and press releases. Manage posting and engagement on all School of Music social media platforms. Work with the Director of Communications to conduct market research. Manage ad placement on social media and in local publications. Manage user generated social media content. May perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

1. Develops and manages forward-looking strategic communications with video and social media to enhance Yale’s reputation and communicate Yale’s messages. 2. Produces multimedia content. Identify topics with compelling visual and audio elements to create stories that exploit those qualities, using video, podcasts, infographics, slideshows and other media as appropriate. 3. Works with communications colleagues throughout the school and university to highlight the work of researchers, create a high profile presence, and reach new audiences. 4. Builds relationships with faculty, administrators, departments and students and maintains contact with communications professionals and monitors trending news topics. 5. Conceptualizes and writes creative posts across all social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other accounts. 6. Participates in regular editorial/content meetings. Propose story ideas to senior leadership. 7. Regularly attends scientific talks on diverse topics to stay up-to-date on research trends at Yale and beyond.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree and minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in science writing, social media, digital journalism (e.g., video, audio blogging, etc.) or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Exceptional communication skills with special emphasis on developing communication strategy, advanced writing ability, and editorial accuracy. Strong leadership and interpersonal communication abilities.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated strategic writing, editing, and oral communication skills. Ability to analyze and articulate ideas to internal and external stakeholders, as well as write press releases, develop marketing and ad copy, and manage brand identity, both visual and written, of the institution.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated experience in developing communications for a range of media and working with creative professionals in design, photography, video, and web design and management.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to independently lead a team of creatives, set priorities, and deadlines, and excel in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Strong graphic design and visual sensibilities; excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

5-7 years of demonstrated experience in communications, including knowledge of design principles, social media platforms, and strong writing skills. Photography and agency experience is desired but not required. Demonstrated experience in classical music is a plus.
