National Communications Manager

The National Communications Manager is a creative, thoughtful and experienced communications professional who can tell compelling stories about the organization and the veterans we serve across a wide range of digital and print platforms. Reporting to the National Director of Communications and Marketing, the incumbent will develop and execute mission-driven communications that leverage earned, shared and owned media to advance U.S.VETS' strategic and fundraising goals of meaningfully engaging a wide variety of stakeholders who are committed to ensuring the long-term success of U.S.VETS through philanthropic support and advocacy. This individual collaborates closely with the national development team, regional offices and external partners to further understanding, admiration and support for U.S.VETS and its mission.

Successful candidates will be experienced in results-oriented communications programs, impactful storytelling and project management. The ideal candidate must have great interpersonal skills as they will work with different departments to gather content and ensure U.S.VETS' messaging is consistent and aligns with branding guidelines. Additionally, the National Communications Manager must have excellent writing skills, an exceptional eye for detail and be exceedingly well organized to efficiently manage a multitude of projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategic communications across multiple channels that build awareness of U.S.VETS and its programs, demonstrate how we are making an impact for veterans and their families, and enhance our reputation with key stakeholders, including donors, funders, policy makers, government, community partners, media, and the public
  • Write and edit compelling content for multiple channels, including websites, social media, emails, appeals, newsletters, fact sheets, event materials, annual reports, and other publications, and provide editorial support for regional offices
  • Partner with national and regional teams to identify impactful stories and build a pool of usable content and testimonials from our veteran clients and the employees and volunteers who serve them
  • Actively manage the organization's social media platforms by developing content plans, writing content, gathering multimedia assets, posting, and tracking results
  • Collaborate on strategic social media campaigns to promote U.S.VETS and increase engagement to influence and inspire a new generation of donors and supporters
  • Draft press releases, talking points, and remarks for various internal and external events, as well as submissions for speaking and award opportunities
  • Manage communications projects from start to finish, including reviewing deliverables to ensure quality standards are met and successfully moving them forward in a timely and collaborative manner
  • Direct the activities of internal and external contractors/vendors such as designers, photographers, writers, printers, and mail houses
  • Gather, analyze, and report data, analytics, media coverage, and other metrics for measuring communications effectiveness and use the insights to adjust approaches as needed
  • Spot trends, monitor current events, and influencers to anticipate opportunities for U.S.VETS to engage in and/or lead the national conversation on veteran homelessness and housing
  • Perform other related duties and assignments as assigned




Qualifications
Requirements
  • Bachelors degree in public relations, journalism, advertising, marketing, communications, or a related field required
  • Minimum 5 years experience
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, including proficiency in Associated Press style
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and work independently in a deadline-driven environment; must be able to manage complex projects while maintaining extraordinary attention to detail
    Self-starter with a high level of initiative and the ability to identify problems and propose solutions
  • Proficiency in social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, and LinkedIn and the ability to effectively leverage each
  • Proficiency in using email marketing tools such as Constant Contact


Preferences
  • Knowledge of website content management systems including WordPress and graphic design platforms such as Adobe Creative Cloud a plus
