The Opportunity

AAU is excited to announce an opening for a Senior Coordinator for Government Relations and Public Policy (GRPP). Reporting to the Senior VP for GRPP, the Senior Coordinator will support advocacy efforts by developing relationships with congressional and executive branch officials, arranging Capitol Hill meetings, briefings, and events, contributing to GRPP communications and advocacy materials, and supporting targeted AAU advocacy campaigns. The Senior Coordinator will also work closely with and help to support the AAU Council on Federal Relations (CFR) constituency group.


We are looking for a high-performing government relations staff member who is proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Excellent relationship-building, written and oral communication, and project management skills are essential to succeed in this role.

This position operates primarily out of AAU’s DC office. After completing 90 days of employment, this position is eligible for a hybrid work environment that requires being in the office at least 3 days per week. This position is classified as salaried and exempt.


Eligibility

  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States.
  • By the date of hire, applicants must reside within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.


Required Qualifications

  • 2-5 years of government relations experience working on Capitol Hill, in Congress, the Executive Branch, state government, or with a higher education institution/association.
  • Background or interest in science policy and higher education
  • Excellent written and oral communication, presentation, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to comprehend and synthesize complex issues and technical information into easily understood materials.
  • Proven project management experience, flexibility to manage competing demands, and ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while coordinating and completing tasks.
  • Capability to work collaboratively with AAU staff and provide leadership in arranging meetings and fostering and maintaining relationships with members of congress, congressional staff, and executive branch officials.
  • Commitment to creating a supportive, cooperative work environment while adhering to ethical standards and AAU policies and procedures.
  • Attention to detail, excellent time management, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to maintain and submit accurate lobbying records in compliance with AAU policy and procedure requirements.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in political science, public administration, public policy, international affairs, or other related majors, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Non-profit, higher education, and/or association experience.
  • Experience working with congressional caucuses/coalitions/task forces
  • Experience working with Zoom, Salesforce Marketing Cloud (or Pardot), and advocacy or federal relations monitoring tools like BGov.
  • Experience with SharePoint, Planner, and email and event managing software systems.


Compensation

The total compensation package for this role includes:


  • A base annual salary ranging from $93,000 - $100,000 (commensurate with experience).
