Position Summary:

The Principal Global Policy Advisor is a key member of the growing global policy team, reporting to the Director of Global Policy, and is responsible for advancing global policy and advocacy priorities that promote and protect sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice (SRHRJ) worldwide. This senior-level position plays a critical role in developing and implementing strategic advocacy efforts, building and managing key partnerships, and integrating policy expertise into the Institute's research and communications. By working closely with global, regional, and national organizations, the Advisor contributes to shaping equitable partnership work and advancing SRHRJ policies and programs across diverse settings. Additionally, this role offers the opportunity to represent the Institute at high-level forums and contribute to the organization’s global policy strategy.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead strategic advocacy efforts at global and regional levels to advance an inclusive and comprehensive SRHR policy agenda grounded in the Guttmacher-Lancet Commission’s vision of SRHR.
  • Initiate, strengthen, and manage partnerships with diverse global, regional, and national organizations, leveraging in-depth knowledge of specific settings outside the U.S.
  • Work closely with regional and country-level partners to co-create strategic initiatives and ensure policymakers understand SRHR needs and gaps based on relevant evidence.
  • Represent the Institute at external meetings, conferences, and high-level global and regional forums, as well as with the media.
  • Work with colleagues to shape the global policy program and contribute to both internal and external understanding of its strategies through collaboration and communication.
  • Collaborate with global research and communications teams to bring a policy perspective to research efforts and elevate evidence-informed policy analysis and recommendations.
  • Create and review materials for a range of audiences, including global and regional stakeholders, in consultation with colleagues and external partners.
  • Contribute to grant proposals and donor reports and represent the Institute in interactions with donors.
  • Perform other job-related tasks as appropriate.

  • Strong organizational abilities, including creativity, managing multiple priorities in a time-sensitive manner, and attention to detail.
  • Comfort and experience in representing an organization at high-level global and regional forums, as well as in media interactions.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic advocacy efforts that align with global and regional SRHR policy goals.
  • Strong skills in initiating, managing, and sustaining strategic partnerships and collaborations across diverse cultural and organizational contexts.
  • Proficiency in analyzing policy frameworks and translating evidence into actionable advocacy strategies.
  • Expertise in navigating and effectively communicating in diverse cultural settings, particularly in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe.
  • Ability to integrate policy perspectives into research and communication efforts, ensuring that policy recommendations are evidence-based and impactful.
  • : Strong skills in contributing to grant proposals and donor reports, with the ability to clearly articulate the organization’s impact and needs to funders.
  • Ability to adapt to changing global policy environments and respond to emerging SRHR challenges with innovative solutions.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with research and communications teams to ensure cohesive and aligned policy efforts.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience in the fields of SRHRJ and/or global health.
  • Familiarity with country, regional, and/or global frameworks that include SRHRJ and/or global health.
  • Proven track record of building strategic and collaborative partnerships.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing advocacy strategies to advance evidence-based policy change at the global, regional, and/or country level.
  • Ability to develop solid working relationships with colleagues across the Institute.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 25% of the time.

Salary and Benefits:

The starting salary for this position is $136,560 to $178,391 and will be commensurate with experience. This is a union position. The Guttmacher Institute practices a hybrid work schedule, requiring in-office attendance 8 days per month at our NYC location. We offer excellent benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; vacation, personal, and sick time; paid parental leave; tuition reimbursement; commuting subsidy; and a 401(k) plan with employer match. The range for this position is specific to New York and DC, but base pay may vary depending on a wide range of factors, including experience, skill sets, and training.
