The Team You’ll Work With
The Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence (ENDGBV) develops policies and
programs, provides training and prevention education, conducts research and evaluations, performs
community outreach, and operates the NYC Family Justice Centers. The office collaborates with City
agencies and community stakeholders to ensure access to inclusive services for survivors of domestic
and gender-based violence.
The Problems You’ll Solve
The Office to ENDGBV’s External Affairs and Community Initiatives Team oversees and operates
ENDGBV’s community-based initiatives, especially non-system based- community work. The team also
oversees our press relationships, content creation, and ensures that our work is being appropriately and
readily highlighted across numerous communities. The ENDGBV Senior Communications Director
reports to ENDGBV’s Deputy Commissioner for External Affairs and Community Initiatives and will
oversee ENDGBV Communications Manager & Digital and Social Media Coordinator. This individual will
work alongside ENDGBV departments and other City agency press teams to develop and execute
effective communication strategies.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and coordinate key campaigns for ENDGBV – such as Domestic Violence Awareness
Awareness Month (SVAM). Identify new campaigns or initiatives for ENDGBV participation.
- Uplift the work of the office and ensure consistent and constant media/press stories of our
initiatives and announcements by:
o Establishing and maintaining relationships with local, state, and national press, partner
agencies, and other stakeholders to develop innovative opportunities that promote
ENDGBV’s mission, with a focus on cultural and immigrant media outlets.
o Writing, editing, and pitching press releases, media advisories, op-eds, speeches,
presentations, and other external and internal communications that raise ENDGBV’s
visibility and enhance its brand, reputation, and voice.
o Planning and implementing ENDGBV communications strategy; making decisions about
what to promote, working with the Mayor’s Press Office to fit into overall strategy, and
carrying out in timely, effective, and well-ordered fashion.
o Working with teams across ENDGBV to elevate press needs.
o Managing events and communications related to special events, such as Family Justice
Center site visits and press conferences. Attending events, set-ups, and walkthroughs in
person.
o Arranging interviews with senior administration officials, including ENDGBVs
Commissioner, Deputy Commissioners, and potentially Mayor Adams, and staff those
interviews.
- Manage the team’s development of public-facing content such as outreach, promotional
language access and accessibility standards, ENDGBV campaigns and operations, current events,
etc.
- Prepare presentations and background material for the ENDGBV commissioner and other key
- Support processes for reviewing, flagging, and distributing relevant press and media hits to City
announcements related to our work.
- Attending regularly scheduled staff meetings and on-going trainings.
- Represent ENDGBV on relevant task forces, workgroups, and committees as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
About You
- You have a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of six (6) years’ experience in New York City and/or
government press/media relations, political and/or campaign communications, or a related field
demonstrating an increasing scope of work and responsibility is strongly preferred; Fluency in
other languages is desirable, but not required.
- You have a background and/or interest in domestic and gender-based violence, preferred;
- You have a willingness to work non-traditional hours.
- You can work independently and as a productive member of the Mayor’s Press Office and wider
team. The Mayor’s Press Office does not work 9-5 hours and requires team members to be on-
call nights, early mornings, weekends, and on holidays;
- You can operate in a fast-paced environment, often under short and shifting deadlines and in high-
pressure situations. The right individual must also be able to juggle multiple priority assignments
effectively;
- You have a previous on-the-record experience is required, as is the ability to shape stories off-the-
record and on background;
- You have a demonstrated professional experience in developing and/or managing diversity, equity
and inclusion initiatives, with a focus on racial equity; Ability to create and maintain strong
working relationships with all levels of staff and with diverse stakeholders;
- You have an excellent project and people management, organizational skills, editing, verbal and
written communication skills; Being a strong writer, who can tell a story clearly and concisely is a
must, as is a clear understanding of all AP-style rules;
- You have high proficiency with Social Media Websites (Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.)
and Microsoft Office Package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.)
Salary
The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive
salary, equity for all full-time roles and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role
is $120,000 to $130,000.
Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on candidate experience and expertise, and other
factors.
