The House Democratic Campaign Committee (HDCC) was established in 1995 as a statewide organization to help Democratic incumbents and candidates win elections to the Washington State House of Representatives. Our mission is to provide grassroots, strategic, and financial support to Democratic campaigns for state House in order to maintain and grow a Democratic majority in the state Legislature. We are seeking a Political Director to assist the organization in achieving these goals.

About the Position

Political Team Management

  • Hire and supervise the HDCC political team, in consultation with the Executive Director, including 2-3 regional campaign staff that will provide direct support to House campaigns.
  • Recruit high-quality campaign managers for the most competitive House races.
  • Develop training programs and materials for campaign managers.
  • Recruit and supervise HDCC campaign fellows and interns during the campaign cycle.

Campaign Support & Data Management

  • Ensure House Democrats run winning campaigns by engaging directly with targeted campaigns to support their overall strategy, campaign structure, messaging, communications, field, and voter contact programs.
  • Assist with candidate recruitment efforts in targeted districts across the state.
  • Develop targeting for all races, and prepare precinct-level voter contact targeting for candidates in competitive districts.
  • Work directly with stakeholders throughout the campaign season and participate in regular meetings with partner organizations.

Campaign & Legislative Research

  • Track legislative issues and caucus priorities each session.
  • Produce issue briefings for candidates and serve as a policy resource for all candidates.
  • Conduct research on Democratic and Republican candidates, and track opposition message development.
  • Develop a legislative profile and district analysis for all targeted races, including Democratic performance and other measures.
  • Additional duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Candidates for HDCC’s Political Director should have a background in political campaigns, political science, public administration, communications, or related fields with a minimum of five years of professional experience working with elected officials, candidates, or high-level executives. Ideal applicants have experience with VoteBuilder/VAN and knowledge of the state legislative process. Candidates should have managed or worked on electoral campaigns and be eager to bring campaign and organizing best practices to the most competitive state House races in Washington state. Experience supervising or mentoring staff are highly preferred.

Candidates must be organized, self-motivated, strategic, and able to work with many types of people and personalities. They should thrive in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments. Ideal candidates will have a sense of humor, will love helping people solve problems, and will be comfortable passing credit to others. Evidence of successful engagement with diverse communities is strongly preferred. Travel in state, evening, and weekend work are required.
