Job Description
The Texas Pediatric Society (TPS), the Texas Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, is a member association of over 4,800 pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, and medical students committed to the optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
Position Summary
The Policy Associate will support the Texas Pediatric Society’s (TPS) advocacy efforts in multiple areas – legislative advocacy, regulatory advocacy, payment advocacy, and external communications. The position requires detailed policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, coalition building, excellent writing skills, and familiarity with the pediatric healthcare system.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities
- Support TPS’ legislative, regulatory, and payment initiatives, as defined by TPS leadership and operationalized by the Director of Advocacy and Health Policy.
- Work with TPS general membership committees to seek feedback on policy, practice, and regulatory issues. Synthesize feedback to create meaningful policy solutions to identified problems.
- Monitor, advise and make recommendations to the Director of Advocacy and Health Policy and TPS leadership regarding state agency rulemaking and other regulatory policies. Solicit physician member feedback and draft rulemaking comments.
- Analyze, monitor, and report on trends in the pediatric practice space especially related to alternate payment models/value-based payment, innovative practice designs, and integrated healthcare solutions.
- Coordinate and facilitate TPS’ grant funded coalitions. Build and nurture relationships to accomplish the coalition’s goals and policy objectives.
- Support grassroots physician advocacy projects to ensure TPS membership is well-positioned and resourced to advance the organization’s public policy agenda.
- Coordinate external communications tasks, prepare draft messaging, and develop collateral targeted towards a variety of audiences to amplify TPS’ voice on key policy priorities.
- Manage grassroots advocacy programs, including advocacy days, the TPS Advocacy Academy, and the virtual action center. Reinforce the value of these programs to TPS members.
- Disseminate advocacy and health policy activities to TPS leadership and members utilizing a variety of mediums, including webinars, newsletter updates, email, and social media posts.
- Prepare tailored research reports and briefs highlighting best practices for pediatric practices.
- Respond to regulatory and policy inquiries and support member requests and needs.
- Work collaboratively within TPS to explore new opportunities.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required; a related graduate degree, such as a Master of Public Affairs, Juris Doctorate, or Master of Social Work, is preferred.
- Three or more years of experience in governmental affairs, communications, payment or regulatory advocacy, and/or public policy.
- Previous experience in healthcare regulatory policy or payment policy.
- Association experience a plus.
Demonstration of Skills and Abilities
- Experience in governmental affairs and/or healthcare advocacy.
- Familiarity with healthcare practice and payment initiatives.
- Ability to create and manage successful programs and initiatives.
- Experience managing multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to function in a collaborative and collegial environment.
Travel
The employee must be willing to travel to the TPS Annual Leadership Planning Summit (typically three days) and Annual Meeting (typically 4-5 days). In addition, the employee must be willing to travel to meet with members, stakeholders, and to represent TPS as needed and during the Texas Legislative Session.
