Job Description
The Juilliard Drama Division Teaching Fellowship is a full-year program aimed at supporting the development of teachers of acting, movement, voice and speech, and/or the Alexander Technique. It provides mentorship as well as opportunities for observation and some supervised teaching.
Fellowships support teachers who are interested in:
- Observing a faculty of experienced teachers in an integrated actor training program
- Joining a vibrant, diverse community dedicated to teaching and learning that seeks to prepare 21st century theater artists, actors, and playwrights for fulfilling artistic lives and careers in the profession
- Developing a deeper understanding of curriculum progression, exercise structure, and teaching methodologies
- Benefitting from the mentorship of individual faculty members
Opportunities offered to Teaching Fellows:
In the first semester:
- Observation of select classes on a regular basis with one or more primary mentors
- Observation of other classes in the curriculum, rehearsals, and project showings
- Regular conversations with the primary mentor about the work observed
- Limited participation as directed and supervised by the mentor, potentially including discrete units of coaching and/or warming up students in movement, voice, or singing
- Other opportunities as assigned, driven by the fellow’s interest or as recommended by the primary mentor
In the second semester, in addition to the opportunities above:
- Observation of the division’s annual audition process
- Potential for participation in rehearsals as an assistant director or rehearsal coach
The Teaching Fellow will also be invited to participate in community meetings and other division-wide events and activities as well as those of the larger Juilliard community.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Attending classes of primary mentor and others on the faculty
- Observing rehearsals and project showings
- Following through on all commitments to lead exercises or coach students
- Participating in rehearsals, community meetings, and division-wide events and activities as well as those of the larger Juilliard community
- Assisting with other duties or special projects as assigned
- Acting in accordance with the Drama Division’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging
Criteria to apply:
- Serious intention to pursue work as a teacher in one or more of the disciplines of actor training
- Commitment to being in residence at Juilliard over the course of one school year (Note: This does not preclude teaching or taking on other professional work outside of Juilliard as long as it does not conflict with the responsibilities above.)
- Minimum of five years’ professional experience as an actor, director, coach, or teacher, or other related experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
- Submission of curriculum vitae and statement of intent covering the applicant’s interest in and passion for the work, what has led the applicant to teaching, and what they wish to learn from the residency in Juilliard’s Drama Division, submitted directly by the applicant via application by April 21, 2023
- Submission of 2 letters of recommendation by 1) a teacher or theater professional who can speak to the applicant’s experience in the field, their character, and their suitability to work with young artists of diverse backgrounds in the classroom, and 2) a former or current student who has been taught, coached, or directed by the applicant, submitted directly by the recommender via https://juilliard.sendsafely.com/u/dramateachingfellows by April 28, 2023
- As part of the application process, finalists will be asked to interview and may be asked to lead a warm-up, teach an exercise or class, or coach a scene.
Stipend:
Each Juilliard Drama Division Teaching Fellow will receive a $10,000 stipend per semester.
