Job Description
Representative Rick Larsen (WA-02), the Ranking Member of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, seeks an energetic and experienced Communications Director to join his personal office team. This position is based in Washington, D.C. with periodic travel to Washington state. This is not an entry level position. Salary is commensurate with experience.
The Communications Director is responsible for planning and implementing the communications strategy, including landing traditional and non-traditional press coverage, overseeing a strategic mass communications plan, a targeted social media plan and working closely with a district communications staffer. The CD will also work closely with Transportation & Infrastructure Committee staff to plan and support Rep. Larsen’s committee communications strategy.
The ideal candidate is politically savvy, a strong writer, willing to adapt and excited to join a fast-paced, creative team. A sense of humor and knowledge of Washington’s Second District are strongly encouraged. Washington state ties are a plus but not required.
Responsibilities
- Develops communications strategy and manages day-to-day press operations, including pitching local and national outlets
- Serves as the media liaison for the Member and manages district and national press lists
- Organizes media events in collaboration with legislative, scheduling and district teams
- Drafts and edits speeches, press releases, talking points, media advisories, op-eds, statements and social media
- Manages website and works with personal office staff to update information as needed
- Works with staff to develop franked mass communication strategy, including telephone town halls and mail pieces

- Is a leader with strong interpersonal skills who thrives in a diverse, collaborative and team-first environment
- Experience developing and implementing communications strategy
- Experience building relationships with local and national press
- Able to make quick strategic decisions and develop messaging under tight deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Time management skills and comfortable balancing multiple responsibilities at once

Salary range: $100,000 - $110,000 or commensurate with experience.
