Communications Lead, Climate & Environmental Justice
Major Function:
The Bezos Earth Fund is seeking a Communications Lead for our Environmental and Climate Justice program, with a priority focus on our Greening America’s Cities initiative. This role is pivotal in content development and storytelling, demonstrating the impact of our commitment to improving the quality of life of the most vulnerable by reducing the drivers or impacts of climate change, while creating new economic opportunities, guaranteeing access to sustainable, green infrastructure and ensuring pollution reduction. The Communications Lead will play a critical role in shaping and conveying the narrative of our impactful work across diverse projects and work in collaboration with partner organizations across our portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute communication strategies for the Environmental and Climate Justice program, focusing initially on managing delivery of the Greening America’s Cities communications strategy.
- Work hand in hand with the institutional communications team and partners to ensure consistency in messaging.
- Find and work with the ECJ team and partners to deliver compelling stories to be shared across communications channels.
- Partner with Earth Fund staff and project partners to co-create content, including articles, social media posts, email marketing campaigns, and video materials. Content will provide thought leadership on environmental and climate justice issues and highlight the impact and progress of our initiatives.
- Serve as the communications liaison to grantee partners and/or communications contractors, ensuring cohesive and effective communication and branding efforts as well as on-time execution of communications products.
- In collaboration with program leads and the institutional communications team, oversee communications contractor (s) to design and implement digital and media campaigns.
- Support Earth Fund staff on Environmental and Climate Justice and Greening America’s Cities website pages to stay fresh with lively content related to the grants in our portfolio, ensuring accurate and engaging representation of each initiative's objectives, progress, and impact.
- Work with the Chief for Environmental and Climate Justice, Director Equitable Urban Strategies and others to build out team and individual social media strategies and profiles.
- Monitor and report on the effectiveness of communication strategies and adapt as needed to maximize outreach and impact.
- Liaise with external contractors, overseeing communications consults, ensuring timely and effective completion of outsourced communication-related tasks and projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- 8-10 years of experience in communications, preferably in climate, environmental justice or sustainability sectors.
- Multilingual capability preferred (Spanish, French, and/or Portuguese)
Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to produce communications strategies and content tailored to a range of priority communications audiences and channels.
- Exceptional project management skills and attention to detail.
- Expertise in media relations.
- Strong storytelling skills, with the ability to convey complex information in an engaging and accessible manner.
- Excellent communicator with exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in digital media, website management; photography and video editing a plus.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Team player with strong interpersonal skills.
- Inter-cultural sensitivity and awareness of national and global environmental justice issues.
- Demonstrated experience working with racially and culturally diverse organizations.
- Experience working with philanthropy or community-based organizations preferred but not required
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- This position is based in Washington, D.C.
- May require extended hours for urgent issues or to meet established deadlines.
- May undertake limited domestic and/or international travel.
Salary Range: $175,000- $195,000
This position offers a competitive salary and includes a benefits package.
