Role Overview
New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance (NJEJA) seeks a Communications & Media Consultant to support NJEJA’s advocacy and organizing work through traditional and digital media. Under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the Consultant will create graphics and copy for NJEJA events and campaigns, manage NJEJA’s social media accounts, and develop digital communications strategies to enhance engagement and amplify NJEJA’s mission.

A successful candidate will have experience in social media management, persuasive writing, and digital communications. They should also be highly self-motivated, organized, able to manage multiple tasks, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.
Responsibilities
- Create assigned graphics, copy, recaps, and other materials for NJEJA events and campaigns.
- Manage NJEJA social media accounts and postings, ensuring consistent and engaging content.
- Prepare monthly newsletters and email blasts as needed.
- Draft relevant op-eds or press releases on environmental justice issues in the state.
- Build digital partnerships with relevant organizations.
- Develop and execute online organizing campaign strategies tied to NJEJA’s policy platforms and educational campaigns.
- If located in New Jersey, attend and support organizational events to gather and compile real-time content (e.g., live-tweeting, Facebook Livestreams, capturing photos and videos).
- Monitor and analyze key metrics to assess the performance of NJEJA’s digital work and suggest improvements.
- Work with the Director of Operations to track, manage, and complete tasks within the assigned timeframe, proactively communicating any challenges or delays.
- Ensure alignment of NJEJA’s overall online presence and branding.
- Collaborate with the Executive Team to draft a long-term communications plan.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience managing social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram) for advocacy or campaign work, especially in the EJ sector.
- Strong writing, editing, and communications skills.
- Graphic design experience (Canva preferred)
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to social and environmental justice, collaborative processes, and the leadership of frontline communities.
- Knowledge of the challenges faced by overburdened environmental justice communities.
Preferred
- Experience writing public-facing materials, including email blasts, social media posts, press releases, and op-eds.
- Familiarity with digital campaign software (e.g., EveryAction).
- Video editing and photo skills (e.g., iMovie, Premiere Rush, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop).
- Bilingual or multilingual proficiency.
