DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

Representative Karl E. Gillespie is seeking a qualified professional to work as a Research Assistant in his legislative office at the North Carolina General Assembly. The Research Assistant represents the lead research support position in a Legislator’s office of the House of Representatives. The Research Assistant communicates findings and recommendations to the Legislator and others at the Legislator’s request; works with central staff of the NC General Assembly regarding issues of interest to the Legislator; and performs other duties as assigned by the Legislator related to the Legislator’s legislative duties.

Examples of Duties:

  • Reports to the Member and will have primary responsibility for research activities in the Member’s office.
  • Researches and analyzes various policy issues and legislation (current and past) and prepares succinct briefing materials for verbal or written presentation to the Legislator and others.
  • Writes speeches, newsletters, news releases, and other papers for the Legislator when requested.
  • Works with the NC General Assembly central staff to work on proposed legislative language under the specific direction of the Legislator.
  • Performs general administrative and office support duties as needed.

  • Significant and positive interpersonal skills required.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing, in person and on the telephone, is required.
  • Ability to work independently, to organize and analyze materials, to prioritize tasks, and to meet short deadlines.
  • Ability to utilize technology and other resources in research.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to handle politically sensitive work with maturity.
  • Willingness to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability with Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to be professional in interactions with legislative members, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain composure and work cooperatively under pressure with coworkers, legislators, legislative staff, and the general public on a daily basis.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended schedules.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s or an equivalent combination of education and research-based experience is required.
  • Some experience in government or the legislative process and master's or graduate degree work would be a plus.
