Join The Doe Fund on our mission to break the cycles of homelessness, addiction, and criminal recidivism by providing holistic services, housing, and work opportunities to under-resourced populations including the formerly homeless and incarcerated, disconnected youth, veterans, and people living with AIDS. Our flagship transitional work program– Ready, Willing & Able – integrates paid work experience, essential job skills, advanced occupational training, and additional supportive services to facilitate trainees’ achievement of permanent jobs and stable housing. The Doe Fund also operates a portfolio of 1,100 (and growing) units of permanent affordable and supportive housing. The Doe Fund has an annual operating budget of $70 million and a full-time staff of 400+, many of whom are graduates of our programs. 

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of External Affairs, the Government Grants Specialist is responsible for managing all aspects of securing new government funding. This includes prospecting and vetting opportunities that align with The Doe Fund’s work and priorities; developing project plans; engaging staff across departments and levels; writing strong funding proposals (alongside budgets and other attachments) and ensuring timely applications in various funding portals. 

Responsibilities:

  • Initiate and manage the application process for 7 - 10 government grant applications per year and ensure that required documents are completed, collected, and submitted in advance of deadlines.
  • Manage (or support the finance team in managing) government contracting systems and portals including the Statewide Financial System (SFS), Grants.gov, SAM.gov, and PASSPort.
  • Serve as the lead writer for all government grant applications, with support from the broader team regarding program details, etc. Ensure accurate, culturally sensitive, and compelling written narratives to fuel a strong success rate. 
  • Upon receipt of a contract, thoroughly review and summarize for the finance and program teams as part of Development’s hand off of the grant for implementation. 
  • Steward the broader TDF team to ensure thorough, accurate and timely information to support high quality, on-time grant applications. This includes developing thorough knowledge of each RFP, developing a shared document so team members have access to the RFP and a snapshot of key details, a milestone schedule and other tools to be developed by the Government Grants Specialist
  • Keep current on new RFPs being issued to ensure The Doe Fund is applying to all applicable

opportunities.

  • Obtain feedback from government agencies when applications are rejected to identify areas

of improvement for future applications.

  • Support engagement of elected officials for discretionary funding by 1) attending bi-weekly meetings with The Doe Fund’s government relations firm and thoroughly documenting outcomes and next steps; 2) attending virtual engagement meetings with elected officials and managing all follow up necessary 3) coordinating acknowledgements for all government funders
  • Track government grants work to be able to report on success rate, total amount of contract awards, timelines, and other outcomes
  • In limited cases (e.g. EFSP), manage interim reporting and collection of revenues (for most contracts, this is managed by TDF’s finance team; there are limited exceptions)
  • Collaborate with team members on special projects and events.
  • Engage in professional development and apply learned knowledge towards using evidence-based best practices.
  • Support grant writing for private philanthropic institutions as necessary, alongside TDF’s Grant Writer
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field 
  • 2-3 years of experience in grant writing, with a focus on government 
  • Strong passion for and alignment with the organization's mission and values
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in using communication tools and software
  • Willingness to and enthusiasm for learning new skills
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.
  • Adept at managing colleagues, including peers and senior management
  • A strategic thinker, who has the ability to see “the big picture” while not losing sight of the details in addition to having creative energy and an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Superior organizational skills
  • Keen attention to deadlines
