POSITION SUMMARY:

The Office of Development’s primary purpose is one of service and fundraising. These efforts include working closely with the Bishop, senior diocesan staff, pastors, parishioners and community members to increase giving to the Catholic Diocese of Arlington and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington and their various ministries, programs, and entities.

The Office assists with programs that encourage financial giving and stewardship from parishioners to meet operational and capital needs and financial resources for ministries, programs and services of the Diocese, parishes, schools, and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington. The Office also provides professional and technical fundraising consultation and support to parishes, schools, institutions and organizations of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington

The Director of Planned Giving directs a spiritually-based diocesan and parish planned giving program, supports and educates parish leadership on planned giving, and actively solicits a portfolio of parishioner/prospects capable of making legacy gifts via planned or deferred gifts of all types.

This position also plays a key staff leadership role in donor stewardship and in the development, promotion, and management of the Foundation for the Catholic Diocese of Arlington (Foundation). The Foundation is a separate 501 (c) (3) that assists parishes, school and donors in creating endowment and donor advised funds.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:

Planned and Deferred Giving

  • Develops and achieves operational and program goals with professional standards that grow the planned giving program and increase the bequests or other planned legacy gifts for the diocese, parishes, and schools.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains a communication plan for all constituencies of the Diocese of Arlington (diocese, Catholic Charities, parishes and schools) that provides information and the benefits of charitable gift planning and the means for potential contributors to make bequests or planned gifts. Plans and implements program components to generate leads including:
  • Monthly Arlington Catholic Herald Advertisements
  • Parish planned giving seminars
  • Ongoing parish bulletin information
  • newsletters mailed to prospective donors
  • special mailings
  • other communication vehicles which may generate leads, i.e., website, online and newspaper ads
  • Researches, analyzes and manages data containing information on diocesan and parish planned giving prospects via the diocesan IMIS software and a dashboard moves management system. The database and dashboard moves management systems are built using established criteria to identify individuals who would benefit from charitable gift planning vehicles and may be inclined to remember the Church in their estate plans.
  • Maintains an active pipeline of Planned Giving and or Special Gifts donor prospects through active prospect research, prospect qualifying and cultivation, personal solicitation and stewardship.
  • Coordinates the recognition program (Catholic Heritage Circle - CHC) for planned giving donors who include the Church as a beneficiary of their estate planning including the CHC annual Dinner. CHC members are donors to the diocese, Catholic Charities, a parish or school.
  • Prepares and coordinates informational presentations to prospective donors or parishioners with focus on the importance of personal and estate planning, tax benefits from planning and the spiritual benefits of charitable gift planning.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of strategic cultivation events for planned giving prospects/donors.
  • Presents information to professionals (attorneys, CPA’s, financial planners, etc.) regarding the various charitable gift vehicles available and identifies ministries which could be supported through such gifts.
  • With the Executive Director of the Office of Development, serves as a staff liaison to the Foundation for the Catholic Diocese of Arlington Foundation Board of Directors.
  • Works with other Development office staff to conduct and coordinate prospect identification and donor movements. Uses all diocesan prospect research tools available to assist in the management and movement of the portfolios of Parishioners identified as five and six-figure gift prospects.
  • Through personal visits to 10 or more prospects per month, the Director will establish relationships with prospective donors and qualify them based on their ability and propensity to make a charitable gift. Visits may be in person, zoom or over the phone.
  • Ensures records for donors and all visits or moves with potential donors are kept confidential and properly noted in files and database for prospective donors.

High School Development and other duties

  • Assists the Director of the Office of Development in other tasks that may include working with the diocesan High Schools in their planned giving efforts and or helping as a liaison to keep track of their overall capital/development efforts.

    • Responsible for effective implementation and data integrity of the Planned Giving files and related information within the IMIS database

  • Physical Demands/Working Environment
    • Requires driver’s license due to the high volume of external visits made weekly, and While performing the duties of this job, required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weight of 10 – 50 pounds
    • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read
    • Frequently required to sit, hear, talk and use repetitive motion of the hands/wrists
    • Work performed in and out of the office setting
    • Required to travel to parishes throughout the diocese
    • Occasional evening and/or weekend work is required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge/Skills: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of planned giving. Ability to organize, create and implement fundraising efforts using marketing techniques. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Creativity, decision making, discretion, teamwork, negotiation, independent judgment, problems analysis and public relations skills are required. Must be able to handle multiple projects and priorities. Strong human relations skills to interact with diocesan officials, pastors, parishioners and business and corporate representatives are required to foster the Church’s mission. Incumbent must also be motivated and resourceful in an organization that has an infinite amount of needs and a finite amount of financial resources. Proficiency in MS Office suite of applications, especially Word, Excel and Access. Basic math skills and knowledge of database software, calculator, basic computer skills and office equipment are required. Knowledge of church organizational and operational procedures required; practicing Catholic preferred. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
  • Education Required: B.S. or B.A. required in accounting, finance, communications or marketing. Continuing education is required to maintain knowledge of tax codes affecting charitable giving.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver’s license must be maintained at all times.
  • Years and Types of Experience: Five to eight years professional development experience in major gift work or planned giving is required. Communications and marketing experience desired. Experience with direct mail and advertising programs for planned giving preferred.
