The Walt Disney Company Enterprise Social Responsibility department oversees the company’s social responsibility efforts, delivering on the vision to be an honorable company that brings families happiness, delivers comfort to those in need, and creates inspiration & opportunity for those who want to improve their world. The Strategic Philanthropy team supports these efforts by leading the company’s charitable grantmaking strategies and global philanthropic operations, amounting to more than $400 million in charitable cash and in-kind giving in 2016.
The Manager, Strategic Philanthropy role will focus on developing and executing philanthropic strategies, including disaster relief, conducting nonprofit reviews for due diligence, tracking charitable budgets, and managing charitable giving processes. This role is responsible for managing the company’s overall grantmaking process to ensure consistency and appropriate governance across all granting programs. Key duties will focus on supporting the company’s charitable activities by working closely with grantmakers and program teams across the enterprise on planning and budgets, vetting US and international nonprofits for eligibility and compliance with company policy, overseeing grant execution, collaborating with Legal on agreements, and playing a lead role in disaster relief efforts. This position will lead a team of two direct reports, and will oversee several thousand governance requests in nearly 35 countries annually, requiring due diligence on organizations, and serving as a key component in upholding the Global Giving Guidelines.
A successful candidate has global granting experience, understands challenges and solutions to global charitable giving, and is abreast of trends in the global social sector and corporate philanthropy. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in the global corporate philanthropy field, be a strong leader, bring impeccable organizational and communications skills, and exude enthusiasm, commitment, flexibility and positivity for the work.
Responsibilities
Partner with key stakeholders across The Walt Disney Company to identify nonprofits and conduct nonprofit due diligence, vet potential projects, develop contribution strategic goals, manage grant execution process, maintain governance and review / approve impact reports.
Engage the Strategic Philanthropy team to track international charitable giving budgets.
Aligns closely with Global Ethics, Compliance Management, and Corporate Legal to conduct research on nonprofits and charitable programs
Monitors all changes to government policies and industry due diligence.
Lead and develop a team working on charitable contribution policies, grant processes and procedure standards for cash and in-kind donations
Leads disaster response relationships with key nonprofit organizations, monitoring disaster response needs and formulating recommendations with Sr. Manager.
Supports employee disaster response efforts.
Responds to unsolicited queries often requiring courtesy meetings, research, and executive follow-up in multiple time zones.
Basic Qualifications
5 years of experience in corporate or foundation or similar grantmaking.
Previous experience leading a team of professionals with strong leadership of a team.
Previous experience working internationally with a keen understanding of charitable giving practices and processes in multiple countries
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience performing a similar role in a Fortune 500 company
Previous experience as a Corporate Grants Manager or Nonprofit Organization Officer
Keen knowledge of charitable law and / or international studies.
Engagement with industry trade associations around the world.
Experience managing nonprofit relationships.
Familiarity with Cybergrants or granting platforms.
Certification as a “Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy”
Required Education
B.A. in Philanthropy, Public Relations, Corporate Social Responsibility, Corporate Communications, Journalism, Public Affairs or Business Administration or equivalent work experience
Preferred Education
Graduate Degree in a related field (MPA, MBA, JD) or relevant work experience working in philanthropic or community / corporate citizenship / corporate social responsibility programs
