Director of External Affairs/Director of Strategic Communications

About SEEC Institute: SEEC Institute is a newly formed nonprofit based in Washington, D.C. The mission of the organization is to convene the private sector, Congress, leading climate and environmental advocates, and other experts to facilitate more formal and regular connections between interested parties and stakeholders to secure the biggest solutions possible to our climate and environmental challenges.


Position Overview: The Director of External Affairs/Director of Strategic Communications (title is flexible) will be responsible for crafting and managing the external image of SEEC Institute, interacting regularly with Members of Congress, and developing, planning, and executing effective events and travel for Members of Congress, staff, and other stakeholders. SEEC Institute is very much a startup -type environment. A successful candidate will embrace that and be willing and eager to tackle anything that comes up on a day to day basis.


This role requires 3-8 years of relevant experience.


Responsibilities:

● Develop, plan, organize, and execute high-profile events

● Plan, organize and execute travel arrangements for Members of Congress and other stakeholders.

● Cultivate and maintain relationships with Members of Congress, their staff, and other key stakeholders.

● Develop and implement strategic communication plans to enhance the external image of SEEC Institute.

● Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries and public statements.

● Coordinate public relations activities, including press releases, social media, and other outreach efforts.

● Collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistent messaging and branding.

● Assist the Executive Director in management of SEEC Institute’s Board of Directors

● Lead the development of annual reports and board meeting materials

● Monitor and report on communication metrics and the effectiveness of outreach efforts.

● Advise the Executive Director on communication strategies and public relations issues,

lead implementation of such strategies.

● Other responsibilities as they arise.


Work hours and benefits:

● This position is based in the Washington DC area. The Director of External Affairs/Director of Strategic Communications is expected to perform the above responsibilities in a work-from-home or remote work environment, except when conducting in-person meetings or gatherings in Washington, D.C.

● Some travel outside of the Washington, D.C. area will be required.

● Ability to work flexible, long hours outside of a normal workday is expected.

● Commensurate with experience, the salary for this position ranges from $90,000 - $140,000 per year.

Qualifications/skills:

● Entrepreneurial spirit and self-starter is a must.

● Strong familiarity with nonprofits and Congress is preferred.

● Demonstrated leadership and management skills.

● Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.

● Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

● Works independently while regularly and effectively communicating and coordinating with the Executive Director.

● Flexible, dynamic, and organized.

● Collaborative and positive attitude.

● Committed to and experienced working in the climate and clean energy space.

● Experience on Capitol Hill, particularly in the House of Representatives, is preferred.


Education, Experience:

● Bachelor’s degree in political science, communications, environmental studies, or a related field.

● 3-8 years of experience in congressional communications, strategic communications, public relations, event development, or a related field.

● Relevant experience in government, nonprofit, or policy sectors.
