The Washington State Team within Microsoft Philanthropies focuses in the key sectors of education, workforce development, community & youth engagement, affordable housing, human services, and arts & culture.

This role leads initiatives within the education, workforce development and community & youth engagement sectors. The work includes program development, policy development, advocacy, strategic partner management, communications, community collaboration, cross-company connection, and grants management. The role will also contribute to the overall strategy development for Microsoft Philanthropies programs for Washington state.

Responsibilities

Lead Microsoft’s Washington state philanthropic program investments, policy agenda and partnerships in early learning, K12, career pathways, higher education, and other formal and informal learning centers with a specific focus on STEM, computer science, digital skills and other high-demand skills.

Design and deliver programs based on principles of diversity, anti-racism, equity, and inclusion.

Build and drive partnerships across education, business, labor, government, philanthropy and nonprofits aimed to improve educational and economic outcomes for people in Washington state especially for those that are furthest from opportunity.

Advocate for government, community, and philanthropic support for Microsoft’s statewide agenda, with a focus on education, workforce development, digital skills, and computer science.

Provide “outside-in” knowledge and insight on societal, economic, community and policy attributes help shape relevant Microsoft business and technology strategies.

Manage ~ 10 strategic partnerships and an additional 30 grantees.

Foster, drive, and promote the company’s contributions to the local community through public speaking, social media, marketing, and other communications efforts.

Serve as a subject matter expert and thought leader, locally, internally, and externally.

Collaborate with government affairs to develop & drive public education and workforce policy agendas at the local, regional, and state level.

Collaborate with other Microsoft Philanthropies and corporate social responsibility teams such as Tech for Social Impact, Skills for Employability, Employee Engagement, TEALS, TechSpark, Airband to help land company initiatives in Washington state.

Work in partnership with key stakeholders across the company to ensure Microsoft is developing a coordinated approach and leveraging company assets in the most impactful way.

Actively seek out innovative best practices and programs from around the world to help inform strategy.

Advocate for technology as a catalyst for positive change and seek opportunities in which technology and Microsoft specifically can help create opportunities for individuals, communities,

Qualifications

7+ years of experience working in the education and workforce development field with demonstrated success developing equity-based strategies, building effective public & private partnerships, and advocating for systems improvement.

3+ years of experience working within or alongside communities in Washington state.

Deep understanding of the Washington state education and workforce system landscape including how organizations are funded, governed, organized, and evaluated.

Proven effectiveness driving multi-stakeholder planning processes and cross-team projects to desired results.

Demonstrates cultural competencies and inclusive behaviors.

Works effectively with people at all levels of an organization.

Strong interpersonal skills including ability to build trust, influence, and relationships with diverse people and groups.

Deep understanding of community and how issues such as poverty, inequity & exclusion impact economic and social opportunity.

Experience in strategic program design, program management, grant management, execution, and evaluation.

A passion for technology as a catalyst for positive change.

Highly self-motivated with a drive, initiative, and capacity for hard work

Creative thinker and problem solver with a bias towards thoughtful action

Excellent communication skills: the ability to distill information into concise communication materials, ability to tailor language and detail to the audience, and use of multiple communication mediums to distribute information.
