The American Economic Liberties Project is a non-partisan, non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to fighting monopoly power. We combine policy and regulatory expertise with strategic communications, coalition-building, and advocacy campaigns to help ensure policymakers protect workers, small businesses, communities, and democracy from monopolistic corporations to advance economic liberty for all.


Position Summary


The American Economic Liberties Project (AELP) is a leading advocacy organization focused on challenging concentrated economic power, promoting fair markets, and protecting democratic values. We seek a visionary and strategic Executive Director to lead our organization through its next phase of growth and impact, overseeing efforts to curb monopolistic practices, influence policy reform, and advance economic justice across industries.

AELP is dedicated to promoting fair, open, and democratic markets by addressing concentrated economic power and advocating for structural reforms across industries. The Executive Director will lead the team in advancing AELP’s mission to curb monopolistic practices, empower policymakers, and protect democratic values in the economy.

The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of AELP. This includes shaping and driving advocacy campaigns, expanding partnerships, and serving as the organization’s primary spokesperson and representative in public and policy-making spaces. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will manage a talented team of policy experts, researchers, communicators, and advocates to ensure AELP’s effectiveness in advancing its mission.


Key Responsibilities


Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and refine AELP’s long-term strategic plan, aligning goals across departments to ensure mission impact and organizational growth.
  • Identify emerging trends and threats in the economic and regulatory landscape to proactively shape AELP’s priorities and positioning.
  • Set measurable goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess organizational effectiveness and progress toward strategic objectives.
  • Collaborate with the Board and key stakeholders to regularly evaluate and adjust the organization’s strategic plan, ensuring responsiveness to evolving needs.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and mission alignment within the team, encouraging staff development and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Promote internal practices that reflect AELP’s values of economic justice and democracy, strengthening team cohesion and resilience.

Policy & Advocacy

  • Oversee the development of impactful, evidence-based policy proposals, ensuring alignment with AELP’s mission to reduce economic concentration and promote fair competition.
  • Lead the organization’s advocacy strategies by identifying key policy priorities, setting campaign goals, and defining policy targets at federal, state, and local levels.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with policymakers, regulatory agencies, and government officials to advance AELP’s policy objectives.
  • Direct research efforts to support policy development, working with experts to generate high-quality reports, white papers, and policy briefs.
  • Mobilize coalitions, partnerships, and networks to build broad-based support for AELP’s policy goals, leveraging diverse voices to amplify impact.
  • Develop public awareness campaigns and participate in media engagements to inform and engage the public on issues of economic justice and antitrust reform.

Organizational Management

  • Provide guidance, motivation, and support to help the team succeed in their roles.
  • Foster a positive work environment and promote teamwork and collaboration, encouraging staff members to contribute their unique perspectives and talents.
  • Provide regular feedback to staff members, both in the form of ongoing coaching and formal performance evaluations, to ensure that they are meeting performance expectations and growing in their roles.
  • Develop and implement staff development plans to support the ongoing growth and professional development of each team member.
  • Model and promote AELP’s values and culture, setting a high standard for ethical and effective behavior in all interactions.
  • Ensure that staff members are fulfilling their roles effectively and work with them to identify opportunities for improvement and growth.
  • Oversee AELP’s high-level financial management, ensuring that the organization is financially sound and operating with financial prudence for long-term sustainability.
  • Lead the development of AELP’s annual budget, alongside program and operations staff, to ensure that it aligns with the organization’s goals and priorities.
  • Monitor financial performance on an ongoing basis, tracking revenue and expenses and making adjustments as needed to ensure that AELP is operating within its budget.
  • Ensure that financial reports are accurate and provided to the Board of Directors in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to identify opportunities for revenue growth and cost savings, while also ensuring that AELP remains financially stable and sustainable for the long term.
  • Ensure that AELP’s financial policies and procedures are in compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines.

External Engagement & Communications

  • Develop and direct a comprehensive communications strategy that maximizes AELP’s visibility and reach.
  • Act as AELP’s spokesperson and represent the organization at public events and speaking engagements.

Board Collaboration & Fundraising

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to ensure that AELP is fulfilling its mission.
  • Provide regular updates to the Board of Directors regarding AELP’s operations and performance.
  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement policies and procedures that support AELP’s mission and goals.
  • Develop and lead the implementation of a comprehensive fundraising and development strategy that aligns with AELP’s mission and goals.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with high-level donors, foundations, and other potential funding sources, working closely with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to engage donors and secure major donations.
  • Work with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to establish fundraising priorities and opportunities.
  • Provide leadership and direction to staff involved in fundraising and development activities, ensuring that all efforts are aligned with AELP’s goals and priorities.
  • Develop and implement donor stewardship plans to maintain strong relationships with donors and secure ongoing support, including regular communication, recognition, and engagement opportunities.
  • Ensure that AELP raises enough funds to meet its annual goals and expand its mission reach and impact, monitoring progress toward fundraising goals and making adjustments as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to continuously improve AELP’s fundraising efforts.


Qualifications


All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience, including:

  • At least 10 years of senior management experience; track record of effectively leading and scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.
  • Proven experience in nonprofit or policy leadership, with a track record of success in economic justice, policy advocacy, or antitrust reform.
  • Background in economics, law, public policy, or a related field, with expertise in issues related to corporate concentration, economic fairness, or market regulation.
  • Strong strategic vision, problem-solving skills, and experience managing complex projects and teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate economic issues for both expert and general audiences.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and financial management within a mission-driven organization.
  • Passionate commitment to AELP’s mission of building a fair & democratic economy.
  • Unwavering commitment to strategy, quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to set and achieve strategic objectives, manage a budget, manage and develop high-performance teams, and coach staff.
  • Strong communications and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit financial management and budgeting, especially within multi-entity organizations.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to planning.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.


Compensation and Benefits

This is a full time, exempt position. The salary range is $160,000 to $190,000 plus excellent employer-paid full coverage benefits, including health, dental, and vision, as well as generous vacation and unlimited sick days, employer matching 401k plan, and up to twelve weeks parental leave. Compensation is commensurate with experience. We strongly encourage LGBTQ, women, and people of color to apply.
