Position Summary:

ARC seeks a highly organized and collaborative team player to join our Research and Evaluation Division as a Research Analyst - Geographic Information Systems [GIS] to provide support to the ARC Research and Evaluation team with a variety of data, GIS mapping, research, and evaluation assignments in support of ARC’s Strategic Plan. Position duties support the collection, management, analysis, visualization (graphically), reporting and dissemination of geographic information and knowledge in the form of maps, databases, and reports. The Research and Evaluation team conducts work, both internally and externally via commissioned contracts, to describe socioeconomic conditions in Appalachia, analyze economic development trends in Appalachia, understand geographic areas of need, and document and evaluate ARC’s programmatic investments. This information is used for ARC policy documents, workshops and events, press releases, research reports, evaluation studies, web site content, and other venues. This position works closely with the Division Director and the Team on database, cartographic, research, and evaluation projects to support a variety of assignments at various stages of implementation, as directed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of research methods, quantitative analysis, general data analysis and familiarity with statistics and social sciences (economics, geography, sociology, etc.).
  • Proven knowledge of GIS mapping software and other data processing procedures for designing, planning and producing geographic information.
  • Expert experience presenting complex analysis and results to research team, managers, and staff across the organization as well as with external vendors and contractors using data visualizations (i.e. charts, tables, and graphs) on various software platforms.
  • Adept research methods and tools to create efficiency for reporting, GIS mapping and other analytical and computational processes.
  • Solid demonstrated project management experience including the ability to develop and follow project timelines and deliverables.
  • Core competencies: accountability, adaptability, collaboration, communication, critical analysis.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment and bring an energetic and innovative approach to his or her work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, economics, regional planning, computer science or other related fields.
  • Successful completion (prior to hire) and maintenance of background security review.
  • Ability to travel (~10%). If travel is needed, must maintain and possess a valid driver’s license.
