Job Description

Flexible Location

TNTP seeks an Education Policy Research Intern to support the Policy & Advocacy team to complete research and support with developing policy recommendations that will advance students’ economic and social mobility. This position is based in a home office, anywhere.

Who We Are

TNTP brings research, policy, and consulting together to reimagine America’s public education system. Working collaboratively, we dig into educators’ toughest challenges, and we provide actionable solutions grounded in evidence. This work takes place in schools and districts across the country, and our national position allows us to spot trends, collect and analyze data, and advocate for policy changes that introduce greater impact at scale. Our goal is to empower every student, breaking them free from the constraints of poverty and race, fostering innovation, and driving growth across the country. We collaborate across sectors and with school systems to ensure that the 3.5 million young people who graduate high school every year have pathways to economic and social mobility.

TNTP’s Policy & Advocacy team seeks to advance policies to create better experiences and outcomes for young people. Our work spans projects large and small across TNTP, including direct work consulting with districts and states on policy issues, researching, writing and publishing reports, and contributing internal policy analysis and collaboration in support of other teams at TNTP and organizational goals.

What You’ll Do

As a Policy Research Intern, you will inform the execution of TNTP’s next generation policy agenda and our support of client work. The main focus of the internship will be dedicated to deepening your knowledge, skills, and understanding of what it means to work in the area of education policy. This work will include researching and preparing for key internal audiences the policy, regulatory process, and systems used by states across the country in selected topical areas, including policies supporting the expansion of career-connected pathways from K-12 to the workforce and reimagining high school graduation requirements to ensure students are ready for college or a career that puts them on a path to economic and social mobility.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working with the Policy team to research and analyze local and state policies across the country, including legislative requirements or frameworks, rules adopted by state boards of education, and the processes and systems in use by state education agencies and school system leaders to implement those policies.
  • Synthesizing research on how states and local leaders leverage policy to govern academics, school accountability, and advance great teaching.
  • Contributing to the Policy team’s strategy development including how research findings may inform that strategy and can be used to advance the Policy team’s work and TNTP’s broader work and mission.
  • Identifying key thought leaders and contacts in states including leaders at state agencies, elected or appointed officials, and leaders of advocacy, business, and community organizations and ways to develop partnerships to further advance TNTP’s policy agenda.
  • Supporting drafting and research for memos and White Papers related to education policy issues.

In addition, the internship will seek to deepen the intern’s knowledge, skills, and understanding of TNTP’s program and initiatives. To complement the work and support growth, the intern will attend weekly Policy team meetings and weekly 1:1 meetings with project supervisors. Additionally, we will be intentional about providing exposure to other parts of the organization and ensure the intern has the opportunity to attend organization-wide learning sessions and meet with members of the Executive and Leadership Teams. We will structure the internship in such a way so that the intern can have meaningful opportunities to engage in discussions with TNTP experts who are leading the work in the field of education policy, strategy, and reform.
