Navy League of the United States: Associate, Legislative Affairs

We are looking for a passionate and highly motivated Associate to serve in our Legislative Affairs Department. This position will assist with Congressional advocacy campaigns, maintaining relevant relationships in Congress, working with the Navy League grassroots network to coordinate and oversee advocacy efforts, publishing the weekly newsletter, work with Marketing Department on social media content, viewing and annotating relevant Congressional hearings, assisting with event logistics, drafting Issue Briefs and Appropriations Letters, data input, and maintain the Legislative Affairs “Action Center” website.


While this position is directly supervised by the Senior Director of Legislative Affairs, the Associate of Legislative Affairs (ALA) will be expected to embody the Navy League mantra of independence and accountability. They must display the ability to self-direct without continuous oversight, to take proactive efforts to better the Legislative Affairs program, and to display the intellectual curiosity to continually learn and expand understanding of the sea services, the Navy League, and the operations of Congress. This position also works closely with the various departments within the Navy League to coordinate Legislative Affairs communications and events, and to assist with organization-wide events such as Sea Air Space, the annual Navy League Convention, etc..


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • View/attend relevant Congressional hearings and take notes on relevant moments. This includes capturing important quotes, questions, answers, or any clear indications of a member’s priorities on an important issue impacting the sea services.
  • Input updates to the Legislative Affairs “Action Center” website.
  • Assist with the publication of the weekly newsletter.
  • Work with the Senior Director of Legislative Affairs to oversee interns and potentially SkillsBridge fellows.
  • Assist with the editing and publishing of our biennial Maritime Policy Statement, as well as uploading updates to the digital magazine platform.
  • Assist with the planning, logistical considerations, and execution of monthly “Pizza Briefs”.
  • Assist with the planning, logistical considerations, and execution of quarterly Congressional Shipbuilding Breakfast events.
  • Provide research and written drafts of Issue Briefs utilized in the Navy League’s various policy campaigns.
  • Input updates to website features such as Voice To Congress, grassroots presentations, advocacy toolkit materials, email campaigns, district profiles, etc.
  • Assist Navy League grassroots network as needed.
  • Assist other Navy League departments as needed.
  • Assist Senior Director of Legislative Affairs with additional initiatives as needed.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (relevant campaign/government experience a plus).
  • Proficient in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook).
  • Strong written skills.
  • Understanding of Congressional committees and legislative process.
  • Previous experience in website design or maintenance is a plus.
