SESSIONAL LOBBYING/ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF ASSISTANT

Sessional staff role for the 2024 Connecticut General Assembly Session

A Connecticut lobbying firm is looking for a sessional staff member for the 2024 Connecticut General Assembly (CGA) legislative session. The ideal applicant is highly motivated, a good note taker, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. Experience in campaign management or federal/state/local government is a plus. This position will be in-person at the CT State Legislative Office Building. We offer a competitive salary and benefits. As the legislative calendar often extends past regular work hours, some early mornings and late evenings will be required. Employment period will be from February to Mid-May 2024.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend and take thorough notes, and produce corresponding summary memos on various meetings of the CT General Assembly, including public hearings, committee meetings, chamber sessions, and press conferences.
  • Utilize the CT General Assembly (CGA) website for bill search functions, committee activities (including meetings and public hearings), research reports, and minutes. Perform daily review of CGA website for updates.
  • Monitor local and national media for topics of client and firm interest
  • Interact with clients at Capitol and on phone and email
  • Accompany firm members on client meetings with CGA committee staff, legislators, caucus and nonpartisan staff at the Legislative Office Building (LOB), State Capitol and around the State
  • Provide administrative support for community outreach functions
  • Provide administrative staff support for visiting clients to Connecticut
  • Work with firm lobbyists to update and prepare weekly bill tracking reports
  • Research and compile resources for firm and client use

Other skill sets needed:

  • Coordinate material drop-off with local, state and federal offices
  • Research issues and draft memos, materials and letters
  • Light office duties – send meeting requests to legislative offices, coordinate and set up phone/zoom conference calls, produce and distribute copies of materials, reports, and testimony; prepare and send individual and group e-mails.

Requirements:

  • Previous work on political, grass roots, or issue-based campaigns or similar experience
  • General knowledge of Connecticut state government and politics; knowledge of CT’s specific legislative process a plus.
  • High School degree or GED equivalent, Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Applicants will need reliable transportation to and from the state LOB/Capitol Complex in Hartford
