ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. Research has shown that having supportive people in the lives of LGBTQ youth can significantly reduce their risk of suicide. We are a non-profit that provides 24/7 life-saving support via phone, text, and chat. We also operate the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth, TrevorSpace, and run innovative research, education, and advocacy programs. We’ve been saving lives every day for over 20 years.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
Reporting to the Chief Community Officer, the Director of TrevorSpace will oversee marketing, product, and operational strategy for the world’s largest safe space community for LGBTQ youth. TrevorSpace, a peer-support community for LGBTQ youth around the globe, provides a safe and affirming space for young people to have discussions, express their identity, and make friends with others who may have similar lived experiences. With over 200K users across over 100 countries, the Director will oversee the continued multinational expansion of the infrastructure of TrevorSpace, deliberately identifying which markets to begin targeted promotions and scaling the platform accordingly, with a focus on enhancing user experience for its members. Through doing this work, this platform has the potential to reach millions of LGBTQ youth globally. Responsible for building an initial team and partnering closely with the engineering, product, and legal teams, the Director of TrevorSpace will play a crucial role in scaling and operationalizing a platform that will function as a safe space for LGBTQ youth across the world.
What you’ll do:
- Develop and implement a multi-year marketing, product, and operational strategy that extends TrevorSpace’s reach to new geographies and languages
- Collaborate cross-functionally to identify and set organizational KPIs and metrics for short- and long-term goals
- Manage and inspire a team of talented experts and ensure they are accountable to team and org-wide goals as The Trevor Project works to serve even more young people
- Partner with cross-functional teams to conduct ongoing market and user research that centers TrevorSpace’s functionality around users’ wants and needs
- Oversee TrevorSpace's user acquisition and retention funnel, recognizing the unique short- and long-term roles that online peer support may have in helping young people avoid suicide
- Work with internal and external partners to conduct research that assesses TrevorSpace’s effectiveness in ending suicide among LGBTQ youth
- Partner with cross-functional teams, such as marketing, product, UX, engineering, and legal to implement the TrevorSpace vision and strategy
- Build and oversee a robust content moderation team that rapidly responds to content expressing self-harm or suicidal ideation, as well as toxic content, such as harassment, insults, or profanity
- Collaborate with our Development team to ensure it has the context needed to effectively fundraise for TrevorSpace’s short- and long-term growth objectives
- Oversee the development and maintenance of user and community guidelines, and report on guideline effectiveness to cross-functional teams
- Speak clearly and inspirationally about the life-saving work that we do at Trevor every day
- Develop, maintain, and assess policies and procedures that prioritize the safety of LGBTQ youth globally
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Who you are:
- Experienced. You are familiar with scaling products on a global level and have led strategic initiatives to successfully reach those goals. You might not be a technical expert, but you know enough to ask questions and give suggestions, and are familiar with collaborating with experienced Product Managers and Engineers to build out user-focused platforms with an eye towards continuous improvement
- Collaborative. People love how you can explain complex concepts in a way that everyone can understand
- Results- and data-oriented. You are driven by results and informed by data. You operate with urgency and efficiency. You know how to identify problems and create informed and comprehensive strategies to make progress and get results

- Innovative. You stay up-to-date on the latest research in tech, but always approach the problem-solving process with practical, simple, and proven methods
- User Centric. You can put yourself in the shoes of the audience and oversee operations that prioritize their experience
- Empathetic. You care about the wellbeing of LGBTQ youth and respect those around you regardless of race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and physical ability
- Fun. The work we do is very serious, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun!
LOCATION: New York City or Los Angeles preferred; flexible location
