Senator Tim Sheehy seeks to hire a proactive, resourceful individual responsible for developing and executing legislation to care for those who have served. Your insights and strategic mindset will help Senator Sheehy ensure that programs and policies will benefit veterans and their families to honor their service. Applicants must have a military background, experience on the Hill, and advanced knowledge of the Senate Legislative process.


Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Manage a smaller policy portfolio; monitor developments within assigned portfolios, committees, and on the Senate floor.
  • Form and advance legislative proposals; draft, analyze, and track amendments and legislation on the Senate and House floors; develop recommendations for votes and co-sponsorship of bills.
  • Acquire an in-depth understanding of topics related to the VA budgets, VA issues and needs, and constituent needs.
  • Prepare the senator for hearings and meetings by writing background reports and memoranda, briefing them on current issues or legislation, and staffing them at committee hearings and executive sessions.
  • Write talking points, floor statements, and remarks in support of the senator’s initiatives.
  • Conduct research and draft form letters to respond to general constituent correspondence; draft individualized responses to letters that cannot be answered with a standard form letter.
  • Represent the senator in meetings with constituents, external private and public sector stakeholders, and relevant congressional staff; liaise with committee and agency staff.
  • Must exercise discretion and confidentiality.
  • Must be able to work under high pressure and time-based conditions.


Preferred Experience:

  • 4+ years of policy or legislative experience.
  • A graduate degree in a relevant field is preferred.
  • Experience working with veterans or servicemembers and providing constituent services.
  • Demonstrated success at advancing policy initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of defense authorizations, appropriations, and coalition building.
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills that value service, collaboration, and teamwork.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to write quickly under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Veteran preferred.
