OVERVIEW:

NFL Summer Internship Program participants have the opportunity to contribute to the organization's success while receiving an unmatched, behind-the-scenes learning experience. Though interns work within specific departments, they can explore all aspects of the business of professional football through challenging project assignments, speaker presentations, mentoring relationships, and networking opportunities.

 

The summer program covers a minimum of 10 weeks, from June 5 - August 11, 2023. Interns will be required to work five (5) full days (approximately 40 hours) per week. Interns will be paid an hourly rate for their work.

EDUCATION: Undergraduate junior graduating Winter 2023 or Spring 2024 with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0. Academic transcripts (official or unofficial) will be requested

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficient in Word, PowerPoint, Excel
  • Particular interest in the Sports, Entertainment and/or Media industries is a plus
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Applicants must be legally permitted to work in the United States and international students must have all visas and employment authorizations before the start of the internship

 

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTIONS:

AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT: The Audience Development team is uniquely positioned within the NFL Media group to offer a valuable and educational experience for any student interested in how the NFL Media business functions, including deep insight into content development, content production, platform distribution, performance analysis, and the strategy that drives all of our resource investments. Additionally, the role will provide insight into how NFL Media supports the 32 NFL Teams via content and platform insights as well as audience engagement strategies. Interns will learn how we employ analytics-based decision making to determine both how we can optimize NFL programming as well as uncovering new opportunities to reach fans in an ever-expanding media landscape. The role will have the opportunity to work with a variety of departments, including Business Development, NFL Media Product, NFL Media Engineering, Media Intelligence, Integrated Sales, Football Ops, Marketing, Consumer Insights, and the 32 NFL Clubs. 

Audience Development Summer Intern Responsibilities:

  • Audience Analysis

Intern will assist Audience Insights team in performance analysis of NFL-produced content and NFL digital platforms

Responsible for applying qualitative metadata to key content across all digital platforms

Priority focus on identifying content that engages youth and female audiences

Develop insights and presentations

  • Cross-platform Content Strategy

Assist in development of a holistic content distribution strategy across NFL Media platforms

Work across Product, Programming, Content, and Business Development teams to document platform requirements and 2023 opportunities

Support development of new content, including new podcasts for the NFL Podcast Network

  • NFL 33 – Club + NFL Media collaboration program

Opportunity to help scale the League + Club content collaboration initiative that launched in 2020

Refine content/program measurement & reporting infrastructure so it’s efficient and valuable for all stakeholders

Service participating clubs on requests and communications

Assist in creation of the weekly NFL33 newsletter

 

COMMUNICATIONS: The Communications & Public Affairs department is the NFL's voice to the public and the media. This department is responsible for publicizing all of the activities involving the NFL, including games, clubs, and players, as well as the leagues’ business initiatives and its commitment to health and safety. The departments’ duties also include interacting with government agencies and coordinating NFL-related political affairs. 

Communications Summer Intern Responsibilities:  

  • Contribute to the promotional efforts surrounding NFL Media initiatives, such as Inside Training Camp, live preseason game coverage, and various NFL Network programs
  • Assist with interview requests for NFL Media on-air talent
  • Writing and editing press releases on NFL Media programming
  • Manage the @NFLMedia account on Twitter and Instagram
  • Update NFL Media talent bios
  • Assist with the asset approval process with League broadcast partners

Communications Summer Intern Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop 
  • Preferred Major/coursework: Sport Management and/or Communications

 

DTC (DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER): The NFL Media Direct-To-Consumer (DTC) Group is a new business segment within NFL Media tasked with building a closer connection between fans and the world's most exciting sports and entertainment experience, The National Football League. NFL Media DTC products combine world-class content with cutting edge technology to drive deeper engagement with fans wherever they are, from the stadium to their home, on any device. The DTC Intern will support the team in identifying growth initiatives to acquire, engage, and retain the paid DTC subscriber base across the NFL’s and 32 Clubs’ portfolio of products.

DTC Summer Intern Responsibilities:

  • Assessment of short-term and long-term content strategy for NFL Media properties
  • Prepare executive updates on NFL+ business performance for senior level leadership
  • Provide analytical support on major initiatives to achieve the strategic goals of the NFL’s DTC business
  • Collaborate with internal partners across the NFL and 32 Clubs to identify, develop, and garner support for initiatives that grow the value of the DTC business

DTC Summer Intern Qualifications:

  • Major/coursework: Preference for Finance or Economics background

 

ENTERTAINMENT & CAUSE INITIATIVES: The Entertainment Partnerships & Cause Initiatives department is new within NFL Media. This group plays a critical role in how NFL Media contributes to the League's entertainment events, including the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Additionally, this group partners across the broader NFL organization to lead our content development and production efforts for cause initiatives, including Social Responsibility, Social Justice, and other important awareness and appreciation efforts. 

Entertainment and Cause Initiatives Summer Intern Responsibilities:

  • The opportunity to learn all aspects of sports television production from our team of producers
  • Gain the skills of research and pre-production of stories, pulling and compiling footage, scripting and story producing, editing, and pitching
  • Have the chance to observe film production on location

GRAPHICS: The Graphics department design and animate motion graphics for the NFL television broadcasts. The essential duties include developing concepts and generating iterations of a “look.” The team is responsible for designing and animating logos, style frames and creating 2D and/or 3D content.

Graphics Summer Intern Responsibilities:

  • Design/Animate Motion Graphics for various shows for Off-Season, Pre-Season games and Total Access according to the needs or demands of the various NFL Network shows
  • Under the direction of the Art Director, generate designs and motion graphics to be used in NFL Network shows
  • Perform the duties of designing both 2D and 3D images

Graphics Summer Intern Qualifications: 

  • Proficient knowledge of Cinema 4D, After Effects, Octane, and Photoshop.
  • Capable of working within the guidelines of an existing graphics package to maintain consistency and quality
  • Must have excellent organizational skills
  • Knowledge of 2D & 3D design is imperative
  • Possess a strong sense of creativity and imagination
  • Major/coursework: Graphic Design, 2D/3D Motion Graphics, Visual FX, Branding

 

MEDIA FINANCE: This position will assist the Finance department in working with departments across NFL Media. The successful candidate will prepare financial reports, perform research and analysis, as well as interact with NFL Media personnel as needed. They will get to work closely with Finance professionals across the League to complete quarterly closes, forecasts, various special projects and ad hoc requests. 

Media Finance Summer Intern Responsibilities: 

  • Financial Planning and Analysis including basic modeling and updates to quarterly forecast
  • Quarterly close tasks including preparation of journal entries and variance explanations
  • Review of legal agreements
  • General Ledger research
  • Accounts Payable tasks including invoice reconciliation
  • Ad hoc projects as assigned

Preferred Major/coursework: Completion of all lower-level and some upper-level Accounting and/or Finance classes

 

NEXT GEN STATS: NFL player tracking, also known as Next Gen Stats, is the capture of real time location data, speed and acceleration for every player, every play on every inch of the field. Sensors throughout the stadium track tags placed on players' shoulder pads, charting individual movements within inches. The Next Gen Stats group is dedicated to the capture and analysis of this data for club and media consumption.

Next Gen Stats Summer Intern Responsibilities:

  • Work with a team of engineers and data scientists to gain real-world experience ideating and building new stats and insights for the game of football.
  • Build new stats based on tracking data using Java/NodeJS/Python
  • Develop the end-to-end solution for processing stats real-time during games and making them available on our websites and BI tools.
  • Build frontend tools to validate stats and raw tracking data
  • Update and develop research dashboards for all NGS consumers
  • Present designs and findings to the NGS team and potentially to the wider tech organization

 

OFFICE OF PLANNING & CULTURE: is focused on NFL LA office internal communications, team culture initiatives and programs, and key cross-functional projects across the LA office and NFL Media with a focus on workplace engagement at the Inglewood office, directly across from SoFi Stadium. This position works closely with LA leadership team, Human Resources, Culture Committee, and Employee Resource Groups at the NFL LA office. 

Office of Planning & Culture Summer Intern Responsibilities:

  • Support operations around NFL LA Community Impact programs (Sports Content Lab, NFL Good Neighbor, Sports Media Sessions) including staff volunteer sign-ups, program coordination and communications
  • Coordinate communications calendar pertaining to LA-specific programs, NFL Media business priorities and DE&I & ERG initiatives
  • Organize and manage NFL LA employee communications with content planning, copywriting and light design/layout (LA newsletter, microsite, in-office monitors, staff meetings)
  • Assist with NFL Media communications and all-hands around business plan updates and progress heading into the season
  • Support Culture Committee and ERG programs and assist with coordination of on-campus culture-based activities throughout the year
  • Partner with various League departments in assisting with broader League-wide employee programs as they roll out to staff in the LA office
  • Assist in supporting NFL Media business plan priorities, DE&I goals and measures of success

Preferred Major/Coursework: Communications, Journalism, Business   

 

ORIGINAL CONTENT:  Summer Intern will support in all aspects, from development through delivery of content. The position is closely connected to day-to-day assignments within the department, taking direction from Sr. Managers to organize and complete tasks for a variety of shows and platforms around NFL Network/NFL Media Group in the offseason.

Original Content Summer Intern Responsibilities:

  • Pulls, sources and locates footage within NFL library
  • Regularly uses various internal NFL tools and software to facilitate post-production of content
  • Takes direction and adheres to established production schedules to meet tight deadlines
  • Assists all aspects of general Original Content work throughout the department  

Original Content Summer Intern Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in Media (storytelling, producing, editing)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Preferred Major/coursework: Sports Media, Journalism, Film Studies, etc.
