The Office of the New York State Attorney General is seeking an experienced and dedicated attorney to serve as the Deputy Bureau Chief of the Law Enforcement Misconduct Investigative Office (LEMIO) in New York City. Established by Executive Law 75, LEMIO is a first-of-its-kind statewide oversight body charged with identifying and addressing systemic misconduct at local law enforcement agencies, protecting the civil rights and liberties of New Yorkers, promoting accountability and strengthening public trust.

To further these goals, LEMIO investigates alleged patterns or practices and individual instances of misconduct, receives referrals pursuant to Executive Law 75(5)(b), and makes policy and other recommendations. Our most recent annual report can be read here.

The Deputy Bureau Chief will be a critical part of LEMIO’s leadership team. Working with LEMIO’s Chief, the Deputy Bureau Chief will develop the Bureau’s enforcement and policy strategies and help supervise approximately twenty attorneys, analysts and other staff in NYC, Albany and Buffalo. The Deputy Bureau Chief will also work with the Bureau Chief and other LEMIO personnel to build relationships with covered agencies, community stakeholders and experts.

Qualifications for the position of Deputy Bureau Chief are as follows:

·        Candidates should have at least nine (9) years of complex civil litigation or criminal law experience, preferably including matters relating to law enforcement misconduct.

·        Excellent legal writing, editing and oral advocacy skills.

·        Candidates must demonstrate strategic vision, strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to lead and support colleagues.

·        Candidates should be familiar with state and federal law governing law enforcement conduct.

·        Candidates must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic office.

·        Experience supervising and mentoring attorneys and investigators is preferable.

·        Experience and interest in community outreach and in working with and in diverse communities is strongly preferred.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment. 

The salary for this position is $168,419 + $3,026 in location pay.
