Pay Range

$89,670 - $111,324 Annually for the G04.2 level

$107,550 - $133,524 Annually for the G04.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Communications Specialist to support the Deputy Director for Science and Technology (DDST) office. As part of the DDST communications team, you will assist with initiatives and projects as well as contribute to integrated communication strategies and deliverables for key institutional priorities. Your work will be performed in collaboration with colleagues in DDST, the Director’s Office and throughout LLNL.

We are seeking an exceptional writer/editor and problem solver with experience in strategic communications and the ability to communicate with executives confidently and succinctly. You will work with all levels of management, program leaders, scientists and administrative staff to communicate initiatives, programmatic strategies, and highly complex scientific and technical information to a wide range of technical and nontechnical audiences. This position will be in the Technical Information Department matrixed to DDST within the Director’s Office.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

You will:
Provide writing, editing and organizational input on technical and nontechnical manuscripts, presentations and web content. Interact with web administrators to publish content to websites.
Provide comprehensive editing services for large and/or complex materials. This includes editorial development of materials, including revisions and notes on errors of logic, gaps in arguments, coherence of presentation, and consistency of terminology. You will also review compliance with information security requirements.
Work with authors or project groups to coordinate projects; tasks include assessing incremental input and manuscript iterations and developing communication styles for complex technical and possibly sensitive material.
Coordinate complex production jobs, often with a team of editors, designers, photographers and web experts.
Coordinate project-specific tasks; develop and implement project plans and schedules for moderately complex projects; make commitments on cost, schedule, and quality for moderately complex communication products (e.g., technical presentations, websites, journal articles, and brochures).
Serve as quality check through interactions with the Print Plant, designers, or multimedia professionals on complex production jobs.
Work independently to perform a variety of other duties as assigned and be able to handle both heavy and light workloads intermittently.
Perform other duties as assigned.

In addition, at the .3 level

Develop original content and coordinate a full spectrum of communication products (news releases, presentations, administrative memos, reports, external reviews, social media, stakeholder briefings and multimedia content (web copy).
Work with DDST team members to define communication strategies, messaging, audiences, and key deliverables for a variety of complex and specialized projects to meet programmatic objectives.
Collaborate and interact with all levels of administrative, management, scientific and technical staff and team members to understand, define, develop, and establish objectives to form editorial requirements for complex projects. Schedule and lead planning and status meetings to keep communication channels open and projects on track.
Contribute to the evaluation and implementation of new tools, technologies, and processes; help develop/track metrics and process improvement methods.
Qualifications
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship.
Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience in technical communication; may have a certificate in technical communication.
Experience as a technical editor/writer.
Experience using professional editing/writing techniques for a variety of media including comprehensive knowledge of technical language, usage and style conventions.
Advanced written and verbal communication skills; experience collaborating and communicating with all levels of an organization, including senior managers, clients, team members, peers, and stakeholders to meet organizational/ programmatic objectives.
Ability to handle unclassified, sensitive and confidential issues with tact, diplomacy and discretion.
Demonstrated self-starter, comfortable multitasking with ability to work to deadlines and respond to tight schedules in a rapidly changing environment and attend to intense details with high consequence of error.
Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work independently under minimal direction within a team environment.
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Teams, familiarity with web content management systems, and working with and creating databases.

In addition, at the .3 level:
Formal project management experience leading complex production and technical writing and editing assignments; in-depth knowledge of multiple electronic and paper-driven production processes.
Significant editing/writing experience in multiple scientific or technical areas using broad based professional technical editing/writing skills including advanced knowledge of and experience using style conventions, professional principles, and technical communication practices and standards including having work edited and integrating editorial feedback.
Experience collaborating and communicating with all levels of an organization, including senior managers, clients, team members, peers and stakeholders to meet organizations/programmatic objectives.
Experience evaluating and implementing new tools, technologies, and processes and tracking metrics.

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
