The Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C) department serves as the voice of and for American Express, with responsibility for Public Affairs & Media Relations, Colleague Communications, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Social Media. Within CA&C, the Manager, Public Affairs will be an integral part of the Colleague Experience Group (CEG) Communications team that supports CEG, formerly known as Human Resources (HR). The CEG Communications team leads the development and delivery of a wide range of innovative, high-quality communications that brings the Colleague Value Proposition to life internally and externally, highlighting the many reasons American Express is a great place to work.
This person will bring the right mix of experience, creativity, project management and technical skills to support communications related to culture, career growth and development, diversity, equity & inclusion, and total rewards and health and well-being. This position demands a high degree of focus on details and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including cross-functional colleagues, senior leaders and media. The ideal candidate has strong written and verbal communication skills, proven ability to collaborate and build relationships cross-functionally, experience in public relations, communications, and social media, and a detail-oriented yet flexible approach to problem-solving.
The role will report to the Director, Public Relations, Colleague Experience Group Communications, and will work closely with colleagues in the Colleague Experience Group and Corporate Affairs and Communications.

Key Responsibilities:
- Create and support communications plans and strategies to secure high-impact news coverage that differentiates the company from competitors illustrates the unique attributes about its employee value proposition, with an emphasis on quality coverage over quantity.
- Write and review press releases, talking points, media messages, social posts, employer of choice award submissions, memos, FAQs, and other documents for external and internal audiences.
- Lead the end-to-end coordination and creation of award submissions positioning American Express as a great place to work.
- Provide communications counsel to internal partners on inquiries from journalists and other external parties related to the employee experience/HR strategy.
- Work with members across the Corporate Affairs & Communications department and the Colleague Experience Group/HR to ensure messaging reflects an enterprise perspective.
- Partnering with organic and paid social media teams to support campaigns on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram—including developing content.
- Develop constructive relationships with press and industry partners to promote and position American Express as an employer of choice.
- Monitor industry developments in HR/employee experience and work with internal strategic partners to prepare for emerging trends and risks.
- Serve as a spokesperson for the company when necessary.
- 5-8 years of public relations experience, with an established ability to influence and counsel internal and external stakeholders while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
- Outstanding written and verbal communications skills.
- Knowledge of various aspects of Human Resources or employee experience, including health and well-being, compensation and benefits, diversity, equity and inclusion, culture, career growth and development.
- Ability to distill technical topics into clear, impactful messages.
- Creativity in developing and managing stories with premier global and national media outlets, as well as local and trade press.
- Needs to be a self-starter, strong collaborator, good project manager, and able to work independently, while operating as an encouraging teammate adaptable to a diverse group of colleagues and partners.
- Ability to prioritize and meet tight deadlines and establish clear priorities quickly
- Strong social skills and experience working with all levels of an organization, including C-Suite and senior executives.
- Consistent track record of navigating corporate reputational matters and crisis communications a plus
- Experience in leveraging digital communications and design skills a plus.

- Ongoing Workplace Flexibility: Full-time position, under a hybrid structure, working some days from the office and the remainder from home.
