Overview - The Consulate General

Our main role is to represent and defend Belgium, its values and its interests, protect and serve the Belgian community established in 13 States and 3 territories (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Northern Mariana Islands, Oregon, American Samoa, Utah, Washington and Wyoming). We (co-)organize events and activities of public diplomacy and communicate on social media platforms, in synergy with the Embassy in Washington D.C. and Consulates General in Atlanta and New York.

Job Description

In the field of public diplomacy and communication, in view of enhancing the awareness of Belgium, promoting its image and its interests, you are responsible for (co-)organizing events, at the Belgian official residence or outside, assist in the preparation of visits by officials and delegations, suggest and support outreach and promotion activities, draft speeches and write communication material and produce content for social media platforms, website and newsletters, help develop and manage the database of contacts, conduct research on topics of interest, write reports and help manage the archive.

As versatility is encouraged within our team, you will also be asked to support and/or fill in for co-workers, also from the consular section.

Conditions of Employment

  • Gross monthly salary: $5,759. The starting salary may be higher, depending on the recognition of relevant prior experience.
  • A one-year contract. Contracts fall under U.S. law.
  • 24 days of paid annual leave, in addition to official holidays.

  • On-site work only.

Essential Requirements

  • Either be a U.S. citizen, a Legal Permanent Resident (green card), or have an A-1 or A-2 visa with an Employment Authorization Document.
  • Excellent proficiency in English (comparable to native speaker).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and ability to work autonomously, alone or as part of a team.
  • Skills in filming, audio and editing.
  • Very high degree of integrity and trustworthiness, especially in terms of respecting confidential information.
  • Understanding of security needs.
  • The candidate must provide evidence of flexibility, efficiency and effectiveness showing strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work under pressure and to manage multiple tasks, set priorities and organize workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Good IT knowledge with a focus on social media and communication tools.

Desirable requirements

  • Knowledge of Dutch and/or French.
  • Prior work experience in external communication and public diplomacy.
  • A college degree or relevant professional experience.
  • A good knowledge of Belgium, including politics, history and culture.

Selection Procedure

CVs and cover letters received by the application deadline will be carefully reviewed. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a written test and an interview. The test and interview will evaluate the candidate’s communication skills and motivation, assess language skills and measure other assets. Administrative questions can also be discussed during the interview.

Security Clearance for Local Staff

Police security clearance will be sought in respect of individuals who come under consideration for appointment. Enquiries may also be made with the police force of any country in which the applicant under consideration for appointment resided. If unsuccessful, this information will be destroyed. If the applicant subsequently comes under consideration for another position, they will be required to supply this information again.
