The Senior Associate Director develops a marketing strategy and participant communication plan for the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk and oversees the design, development, and production of all marketing materials and deliverables, and collaborates with Digital Marketing on digital advertising and developing social media strategies. The Senior Associate Director liaises with Philanthropy Communications and Institute Communications to develop a cohesive and strategic plan to maximize Walk exposure. The Associate Director also works with a small portfolio of “VIP” Walk participants. Responsible for assisting the entire Division with reaching financial goals.

The onboarding of this role will include a comprehensive training process which includes completion of online modules, shadowing colleagues, as well as hands-on learning experiences throughout the first calendar year in the role.

Dana-Farber is currently undertaking an ambitious fundraising effort to change the future of cancer research and care: The Dana-Farber Campaign. This multibillion-dollar campaign is the largest in the Institute’s history and one of the largest ever in the U.S. focused solely on cancer. Philanthropy raised through The Dana-Farber Campaign is focused on accelerating the Institute’s strategic priorities by supporting revolutionary science, extraordinary care, exceptional expertise, and essential opportunities—helping us prevent, treat, and Defy Cancer.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Revenue responsibility $250,000
  • Conduct a minimum of 35 donor visits with at least five conducted as revenue generating visits
  • Develop marketing strategy and participant communication plan for the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk and liaise with Philanthropy
  • Communications department to oversee the design, development, and production of all marketing materials and deliverables, including:
  • Project management and creation of mail and e-mail communications planned to recruit participants and communicate with targeted participant segments with messages tailored to them, including newsletters, e-blasts, and auto emails
  • Project management and oversight of photography and video production to promote the event
  • Project management and developing content for Social Media channels to promote the event
  • Ensuring that all marketing pieces are as inclusive and diverse as possible
  • Liaise with Institute Communications department and external PR agency to develop a cohesive and strategic plan to maximize Walk exposure
  • Partner with Assistant Director, Institute Initiatives, to draft and execute DFCI employee marketing and communication plan for the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk:
  • Create schedules, obtain approvals to promote DFCI marketing plan
  • Collaborate with Philanthropy Communications to produce materials to market to employees
  • Oversee all communications pieces to Dana-Farber employees
  • Collaborate with Institute Communications and other DFCI staff to implement DFCI marketing initiatives and inventory
  • Develop marketing strategy to support recruitment and fundraising efforts, and communicate logistics of the event to all priority constituents:
  • Develop strategy for and execute segmented messaging and communications to all constituents
  • Oversee year-round messaging on website
  • Oversee speaking program/ briefings for speakers for Walk day finish line and other events throughout the year
  • Assist Assistant Vice President in developing strategy for new business initiatives and assist in managing their execution
  • Assume major responsibilities/a leadership role with regards to set-up and logistics on event weekend
  • Co-manage one Assistant

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Reports to Assistant Vice President, Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk. Co-supervises one Assistant.

Minimum Job Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required with minimum 6-8 years’ experience in marketing and professional fundraising.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Detail oriented with excellent verbal and written communication, quantitative and organizational skills; ability to manage others; possess the ability to work well with all DFCI Departments and donor constituencies of all levels; juggle multiple projects; and work independently in a fast-paced environment. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Power Point.

This position will evaluate current programs and create and execute approved plans to expand and diversify the donors and participants for the events assigned in order to broaden our donor base and create even more inclusive events. Experience with diverse donors is a plus.
